I just returned from Huancayo, Peru. I worked as a volunteer to make rounds at a hospital and visit various orphanages in and around this town. Located in the Andes, it was immensely fulfilling, and an eye opener for anyone who has never experienced this.
During our break, we had a chance to visit artisan markets. One was a family who made silver jewelry. They also made their own chains. Another was a family who made textiles through knitting and weaving. Their main fiber is Alpaca, in which they would spin this into yarn and use all natural dyes. I don’t know how they knew to use white bugs from a cactus to make red, and brown wood to make blue. It was truly inspirational, especially when today’s world is about mass consumption.
